How to React When Someone Attempts to Make You Show up Bad

Their negativity may be rather annoying, whether it is from a random internet troll, an insecure friend, or a coworker. But keep in mind that their actions reveal more about them than they do about you, so think twice before allowing their remarks to hurt you. Here’s what you should do if someone makes an attempt to disparage you.

Keep it in perspective.

Recall that such remarks are a mirror of their own fears, not of your value. See their negativity for what it is, an attempt to drag you down to their level, and try to distance yourself from it. Don’t let what others say define you or cause you to lose confidence.

Evaluate the circumstances and their intentions.

Step back and try to figure out why this individual is attempting to discredit you. Do they harbor jealousy? Uneasy? Do they harbor resentment for you personally? Recognizing their intentions will enable you to react correctly and stay out of their drama.

React with poise and composure.

Avoid letting them frighten you. According to Forbes, if they’re accusing or circulating rumors, deal with them politely and directly. Don’t be scared to defend yourself and offer facts to back up your assertions. Remind yourself that you have nothing to be embarrassed of and that the truth remains unaffected by their criticism.

Stay above their level.

Avoid the temptation to respond negatively or with insults of your own. While it may feel nice in the moment, doing so will only make you appear petty and won’t address the situation. Rather, adopt a dignified stance and react with poise and maturity. Prove to them that you won’t let their pessimism to depress you.
