How to keep worry under control

“I believe God is managing affairs and that He doesn’t need any advice from me. With God in charge, I believe everything will work out for the best in the end. So what is there to worry about?” – Henry Ford

Once it gets a hold on us, worry becomes a habit. Sometimes we clasp a habit from other people. If a married partner, or a colleague at work, happens to be an enduring worrier, we become more aware of our anxieties and fears which never entered our minds before.

How to keep worry under control

When the worry habit is long-lasting, the cause is to be found in a person’s childhood. We are probable to have acquired it from parents. They may imagine disaster and possible disaster in the smallest set-back and thus you were raised in an atmosphere of tension and crisis. Or they could have been awfully anxious about you to do well, and shown their anxiety by over-stressing the importance of success .

It helps us to realize why we are prone to worry. We are then capable to understand it better and play it down, and be less concerned. At the same time, this does not mean trying to ‘forget’, or trying to persuade ourselves that a worry is not there.  No worry should be allowed to remain in the background of the mind without pulling it out and taking necessary action.

We should take steps to ignore and forget it to see our worries in the right perspective. They need cutting down to their proper size, with a clear distinction being made between what is factual (something in which we are here and now involved), and imaginary (something which may or may not occur in future). Don’t get dramatic about it, and when other people are also involved, discourage this tendency in them. Be realistic. Be practical. Be constructive. A sense of reality, personal courage, and a good dose of common sense are the factors which help us control worry and reduce it to a minimum. The practical realist can survive great trouble and the major crisis, whereas a chronic worrier is continually being upset by anxieties.

To get to grips with worry is more than half the battle. Practical, realistic persons look at it fairly and exactly without embellishing its importance. His or her attitude can be summed up in two sentences. This has happened.

What is the best way to deal with it

This is nothing but thinking . From this we go on to acquire any useful information and advice and to discover what help is available. All the pros and cons are considered before we decide what to do. Conversely, worrying consists of thinking about what may happen, consequences, and how unpleasant it would be. This type of metal activity goes around in circles, covering the same ground again and again without control.

We sometimes worry when it is not really our worry and when, actually, however much we worry; we can do nothing about it. Hard tough it may be an important part of controlling worry in ourselves is to leave others alone to decide for themselves. Finally, shut your bedroom door firmly on worry. It can happen that your subconscious mind will resolve a worry for you whilst you are relaxed and asleep.
